Job Description- Animal Behavior and Enrichment Technician

Summary

Requirements

The candidate must have an M.S. or B.S. and a minimum of five years’ experience in laboratory animal research environment. The preferred candidate will have experience with procedures in husbandry and veterinary technical support with mixed laboratory animal species and an emphasis on non-human primates. Candidates should have knowledge of operational principles behind techniques and procedures used in animal enrichment and behavior analysis. Accurate and timely data/sample collection, record keeping, data processing and critical thinking skills are a must. Knowledge of math and science through education or demonstrated experience. Good English, oral and written communication skills are required. Must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb, stoop, bend, reach, sit and stand for prolonged periods. Must be responsible and reliable to work independently when necessary and maintain harmonious client and team relationships.

Duties

1. Support with the development and improvement of behavior and enrichment programs.
   1. Ensuring all species are monitored and observed for behaviors that have an effect on welfare and study requirements.
   1. Perform social introductions for animals housed in research facilities (NHPs, canines, swine, rabbits, guinea pigs).
   1. Perform behavioral evaluations; treat animals as necessary (in conjunction with veterinary staff). 
   1. Complete behavior assessments and document results into animal health records.

   1. Conduct staff training to ensure enrichment procedures are followed for individual species.
   1. Contribute to the development and implementation of the enrichment program including new procedures and devices.
   1. Occasional rodent contact may be required.
   1. Revise current enrichment strategies for optimal performance.
   1. Writes, revises, and reviews/edits relevant SOPs.
