JOB TITLE:                Animal Health Technician II Bethesda, MD


  • Work with subordinate employees to ensure that all work is performed in accordance with Animal Welfare Act and the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals: ILAR publication 2011, and the task Statement of Work.
  • Adhere to established Bldg. 49 Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Work tactfully and effectively with Co-Workers and Laboratory Staff;
  • Routine animal health surveillance and/or assessment of sick animals;
  • Routine veterinary care/support and treatments as prescribed by the Veterinary Staff;
  • Maintains inventory of all pharmaceutical supplies and medical equipment;
  • Maintains permanent animal health records and reports;
  • Diagnostic support to include sample collection and preparation (e.g., blood, serum, tissue, etc.), fecal analysis, hematology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, radiology, and dental prophylaxis;
  • Perform animal health physicals as scheduled
  • Work under ABS Level I and II conditions;
  • Anesthesia support to include induction, maintenance, and recovery of animals;
  • Surgical support to include instrument preparation and sterilization, animal preparation, sterile and non-sterile scrub assistants for the support of aseptic surgeries;
  • Environmental enrichment activities;Sanitation of surgical rooms and support areas;
  • Radiation monitoring of posted rooms and/or areas within the CAF;
  • Transportation of carcasses and sentinel animals to diagnostic laboratories;
  • Perform technical procedures including but not limited to: routine injections and blood collection, tumor observations, timed mattings, plug determinations, and weaning of animals, tail biopsies, ear tagging, weighing of animals, and implantation of subcutaneous transponders;
  • Pre-procedural food and/or water restriction of animals;
  • Routine serology screening for rodent surveillance and quarantine rooms.
  • Identify and report potential problem areas with personnel, equipment, or facilities.
  • Operate a computer to enter animal related data. Use of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Assist Senior Animal Health Team Leader in meeting contractual obligations
  • Other duties as assigned


Must be certified at the AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician level with a BS degree in the sciences or have 91T/68T or LVT or degrees in veterinary medicine; candidate will be required to obtain AALAS certification at the LATG level within two years of employment. Applicant must have 4 years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility. Good Laboratory Practice Regulations(GLPs) experience is a plus. Experience with rodents and nonhuman primates is desired and experience with rabbits, and ground squirrels is helpful. Applicant must demonstrate a working knowledge of veterinary technology, technical experience and knowledge of surgical nursing, preparation and assisting, anesthesiology, post-op care, pharmacology, laboratory procedures and radiology.  Candidate must possess a great work ethic, be reliable, punctual, and trustworthy.  A working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office is also needed. Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. Positions requires that the individual be able to stand for prolong period of time, climb, bend, reach, and stoop.
