Job Description

This position is a 6 month position located at NYU Institute of Environmental Medicine in Tuxedo Park, NY

  • High school diploma and 5 years experience in an animal research facility.
  • AALAS certification at the laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level required.
  • Able to speak and write fluent English.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy essential.
  • Ability to manage transportation to offsite facility at Sterling Forest.

SCHEDULING OF STAFF Assists with assigning responsibilities amongst staff, and monitors their work.Performance Criteria:

  • Defines the expected outcome and time of completion clearly to the employee.
  • Communicates the objective of the assignment to the employee.
  • Institutes appropriate follow-up with the employee to ensure that the desired outcome is reached.
  • Assists in assigning work in order to accomplish goals in a timely fashion and makes all allowances for individual initiative.
  • Allocates resources appropriately so that task can be accomplished.
  • Distributes assignments equitably.
  • Monitors manpower and efficiencies; makes necessary adjustments and reassignments according to workload demands.

LIAISON WITH PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS Interacts with Principal Investigators to provide timely protocol support services.Performance Criteria:

  • Alerts the Veterinary Services Staff on animal health related matters, individual animals in pain or distress or experiments causing problems related to the animal's well being.
  • Provides assistance to investigators with specific problems on equipment, caging, and animal husbandry.
  • Responds to changes as they occur in research testing schedules. Provides timely, high quality, and other complex response(s) on short notice to meet quality, and other complex response(s) on short notice to meet research needs.
  • Ensures that Principal Investigators comply with guidelines concerning removal of an animal from the facilities area and proper disposal of animal remains.

ANIMAL CARE Provides routine care of research animalsPerformance Criteria:

  • Feeds animals in assigned areas following established schedule.
  • Provides adequate food, bedding, enrichment devices and water as required.
  • Checks animals daily to identify sick animals, notifies veterinary technician of any unusual conditions.
  • Weighs animals as required.
  • Assists Veterinary Technicians.
  • Administers medications (pills, injections) on weekends and as instructed.
  • Receives, checks in animals and materials and delivers to correct locations.
  • Perform routine weekend and holiday overtime as scheduled.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Monitors and controls environmental conditions.Performance Criteria:

  • Periodically checks temperature, ventilation and lighting in animal rooms and related areas.
  • Adjusts conditions as required.
  • Notifies supervisor of problems with related equipment (heating/air conditioning systems, etc.).

RECORDKEEPING Maintains a variety of records (log of room activities).Performance Criteria:

  • Records information accurately and promptly.
  • Records, write, and communicate data to all NYULMC staff on the appropriate level.
  • Completes recordkeeping in accordance with outlined procedures.
  • Maintains records in an organized and up-to-date manner.
  • Processes animal orders
  • Processes cage card requests

INVENTORY CONTROL Monitors supplies for specific animal quarters.Performance Criteria:

  • Maintains adequate supplies by monitoring levels on an ongoing basis.
  • Checks availability of supplies and restocks all areas as required.
  • Orders supplies and/or advises supervisor of shortages in timely manner.

INVENTORY FILES Maintains inventory levels for all husbandry supplies in the department.Performance Criteria:

  • Determines appropriate level of food, bedding, cage wash chemicals, caging, accessories, etc. needed.
  • Evaluates existing equipment to assess feasibility; makes recommendations for modifications or upgrade as needed.
  • Oversees the receipt and housing of animals. Coordinates the logging, arrangement of available housing facilities, proper care identification to ensure efficiency and regulatory compliance.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES Assists with relocation of facility equipment and supplies. Performance Criteria:

  • Transports facility related supplies and equipment to new locations, as instructed.
  • Completes assignments on timely basis.
  • Reports delays or problems to Supervisor.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of room supplies.

TRAINING Assists in training of new staff.Performance Criteria:

  • Explains work procedures and methods clearly and accurately in accordance with Supervisor's instructions.
  • Functions as a resource to junior staff concerning procedural questions and minor problems.
  • Brings discrepancies or problems to attention of supervisor.


  • Answers telephone courteously and responds to general questions; takes messages accurately.
  • Greets investigators promptly; directs visitors to proper individual or area based on content of inquiry.
  • Performs general administrative duties efficiently, as required (filing, duplicating, completion of forms).

CLEANING Performs routine cleaning and sanitizing of laboratory and animal rooms.Performance Criteria:

  • Assembles necessary supplies and equipment needed to complete duties.
  • Sweeps and mops all areas thoroughly.
  • Empties all trash receptacles and disposes of trash properly.
  • Disposes of laboratory waste in accordance with established protocols.
  • Performs additional cleaning as required, or upon request.

CAGE-WASH MACHINE OPERATION Sanitizes animal cages and related equipment.Performance Criteria:

  • Cleans animal cages and equipment following established schedule.
  • Prepares animal housing and equipment for cleaning process.
  • Operates cage-wash machines correctly, following safety guidelines.
  • Notifies the Supervisor in the event of equipment malfunction
