 Cagewash Technician II (Lead)
Summary*
 Under the direction of the Cagewash Department Manager, the Cagewash Lead will provide direct oversight and leadership to the Cagewash Department staff on a daily basis.  As a working supervisor, the Lead will be responsible for ensuring that work is performed in a safe manner, in accordance with policies, procedures and program SOPs.  They shall perform training and guidance to subordinate staff and maintain a positive and effective working environment.
 
Basic Requirements*

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification is preferred.
  • Must possess a command of the English language both written and verbal in order to effectively communicate with coworkers, clients and researchers on a daily basis.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, excel, Word, Access) preferred.
  • Must be able to cover hours on any cagewash shift as needed; current operating hours are 7:00am – 5:00pm M-F (hours subject to change as production needs change). 
  • All employees considered essential and must report to scheduled shift regardless of inclement weather and/or Government closures. 
  • Must have the physical strength and dexterity to handle cages, racks, feedbags, carts, dollies, and other equipment.
  • These persons shall have knowledge of sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization. Previous cagewash experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to work in an environment utilizing chemicals and heavy machinery.

 
Essential Duties*
 

  • Clean, sanitize, or sterilize caging or equipment utilizing automated cagewash machines, autoclaves, bottle fillers, and bedding dump stations.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly duties in adherence to equipment sanitation and sterilization schedules.
  • Clean and sanitize cagewash and ancillary areas.
  • Dispose of waste in compliance with NIH “Guide” and federal/state regulations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of caging, equipment and machines in accordance with SOPs and service manuals.
  • Movement/delivery of feed/bedding sacks, cages, racks, carts, dollies and other equipment.
  • Assure that procedures and practices involving the program of animal care are appropriate for the continued maintenance of AAALAC accreditation of the facility.
  • Adhere to security procedures and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ensure performance of activities in adherence with established SOPs.
  • Participate in the ongoing employee training program, with special emphasis on safety and health training, safe work practices, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Perform job tasks/duties in compliance with ILAR “Guide”, policies, regulations, safety, and security procedures.
  • Perform work in compliance with applicable safety requirements.
  • Assure that facility documentation, records, and logbooks are accurately completed and maintained.
  • Compliance with the QA/QC program.  To include bi-monthly/monthly collection of environmental samples for submission or in house testing in accordance to the SOPs.  Report the results/findings obtained to the Cagewash Department Manager.
  • Establish and maintain contact with service providers while onsite.  Report the information obtained to the Cagewash Department Manager.
  • Recommend changes in operational procedures that might increase the efficiency or effectiveness of work procedures or practices.
  • Observe and report any abnormalities in equipment or facilities to the Cagewash Department Manager or the Assistant Project Facility Manager.
