Job Description

 Animal Care Technician at University of Vermont
Description: The successful applicant for this position assists in the care and maintenance of healthy laboratory animals in accordance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines. The Animal Care Technician must properly use and maintain all necessary equipment and follow proper animal care and housing techniques as determined by departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Institutional Policies. Animals must be properly identified, fed and observed daily and husbandry records must be complete, accurate, and timely to insure that proper research conditions are being maintained. In addition, completion of all relevant husbandry duties in ABSL I, II & III environments while exercising proper containment techniques will be required.
This position is full time M-F and rotational weekends and holidays. This is not an entry level position and advancement possibilities for this position are very high if candidate shows enthusiasm and motivation.

Working Hours: M-F 7:30am to 4:00pm, rotational weekends and holidays
Qualifications: Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree is preferred. Candidate must possess an AALAS certification; ALAT or higher is desirable. Prior experience in a research animal facility is preferred. Qualified personnel must have a valid driver's license and have the ability to lift up to 50lbs. Rotational weekends and holidays are required.
Job Duties:
• Perform daily animal health checks
• Perform animal husbandry duties in ABSL I, II & III environments
• Collect weekly and monthly census data
• Receive animals into the facility and place them into proper housing
• Follow written animal order and animal transfer instructions
• Communicate with laboratory members to accommodate needs
• Work closely with veterinary staff for medical needs
• Change caging, accessories, food and water on a strict schedule
• Report any physical abnormalities, health concerns or environmental changes to Vet Staff
• Monitor rooms for temperature, humidity and light cycles and notify Manager of any deviations
• Operate heavy machinery, including cage washers and autoclaves
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of all assigned rooms
• Stock PPE stations
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs, bend, stoop, pivot and perform repetitive motions on a daily basis
• Ability to maintain detailed records of daily activities and quality assurance logs
• Work with minimal supervision in a team environment
• Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
• Drive the company van for the transportation of supplies, accessories and animals
• Must be able to work rotational weekends and holidays as assigned
• Must be able to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and via email.
• Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions
• Other duties, as assigned
