Overview

The Research Animal Programs (RAP) – Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) department is seeking a proactive, highly organized, and detail-oriented Administrative Coordinator to support a dynamic and growing department. This position plays an integral role in the daily administrative operations of both LAR and the Primate Research Resources (PRR) departments. The Administrative Coordinator provides direct support to the Executive Director of LAR, the Director of PRR, and the LAR Business Manager, while also serving as a key point of contact and resource for all LAR/PRR staff and management. This position is located at an on-campus facility as well as time spent in our Hopewell Research Facility.

Acting as a central operational hub, this position ensures the smooth flow of internal processes, contributes to department-wide efficiency, and delivers high-quality service to the research community—allowing investigators to remain focused on their research and teaching missions. The Administrative Coordinator is responsible for a broad range of administrative functions, including office management, training coordination, visitor services, procurement backup, and support for special projects and department initiatives. Administrative Operations & Office Management

• Serve as the first point of contact for visitors, phone, and email inquiries, providing a welcoming and professional presence for the department.

• Maintain complex calendars for department Executive Director and other RAP leadership, including scheduling internal and external meetings, preparation, and follow-up tasks.

• Coordinate onboarding and offboarding for new hires, contract staff, and visitors; prepare welcome packets and departmental tours with internal stakeholders.

• Manage department communications, email lists, mail distribution, coordinate key and building access, and general office logistics as well as assist with the department shared inbox.

• Maintains up-to-date list servs, website lists and staff rosters.

• Draft agendas, prepare meeting materials, take minutes, and ensure follow-up for meetings and strategic sessions.

• Act as backup to the Procurement Coordinator and provide general assistance to the LAR Business Manager and PRR Director.

• Assists with the electronic management of cage card activations and deactivations, working closely with Procurement Coordinators and triaging the shared departmental inbox to ensure timely and accurate processing.

Event & Meeting Coordination

• Plan and support logistics for departmental meetings, staff training, management meetings, and staff recognition events. Assist with department scheduling as needed.

• Manage events across six facilities - on and off campus, including scheduling, room reservations, catering coordination, and preparation of materials.

• Support large-scale events such as new employee orientations and professional development sessions.

Travel, Expense, and Financial Support

• Coordinate travel arrangements for department leadership.

• Assist in the process with reimbursements and complete expense reports using Concur.

• Support scanning, organizing, and reconciling census documents, invoices, vendor paperwork, and purchasing card documentation.

Training & Documentation

• Serve as a guide for departmental staff on policies, procedures, and systems use.

• Maintain and update internal training documentation to support cross-functional teams and new staff.

• Assist in the coordination of training sessions and act as a resource for procedural and operational questions.

Special Projects & Support

• Support the development, formatting, and organization of department procedures and templates.

• May represent LAR/PRR on internal committees or working groups.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma with at least 3+ years of relevant administrative experience.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Clinical Veterinarian provides veterinary support to Division of Veterinary Resources laboratory animal programs consistent with DVR guidelines. The primary responsibility shall be the provision of veterinary medical and surgical care to the non-human primate (NHP) colony.  Participation in the veterinary medical care program for other animal species is included as a smaller component of the duties of the position. Clinical Veterinarian responsibilities include providing daily clinical care and treatment of the laboratory animals; participation in emergency call schedule and after-hours veterinary care, ICU night, weekend, and holiday coverage with other veterinarians as required.  All services must be provided in accordance with all applicable regulations.

 
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent required.
  2. Must have a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one (1) state.
  3. Minimum three (3) years’ experience required in clinical laboratory animal medicine which must include non-human primates (NHPs).
  4. Completion of a residency program in laboratory animal medicine and certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.
  5. Experience with IACUC activities and research protocol review/approval process, and/or consultant service to the IACUC.
  6. Must have knowledge of laboratory animal technician duties and training.

    • Shall have demonstrated ability to interact effectively with PIs, Study Directors and investigator team(s) to achieve goals set forth within approved research protocols involving animal care, developing department master schedules and study-specific schedules, diet, dosing, and standard observational and technical procedures and accurate reporting of such data.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  

*All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00am and depart at 3:30pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. Primary duties may include the following:

Summary

BLDG 49 ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN II

Summary

The Animal Health Technician II will provide surgical, technical, and clinical support services under the direction of the Senior Animal Health Team Leader or respective Animal Health Technician III. They must demonstrate a working knowledge of veterinary science and technology (e.g., first aid response, pharmacy and pharmacology, treatment, and examination) as well as technical experience and competency in surgical nursing, preparation and assisting, anesthesiology, nursing, laboratory procedures and radiology Experience should be related to the species housed in the Building 49 CAF.  Animal Health Technician II will assist the Animal Health Leaders in providing all animal health services.

Requirements

Preferred personnel be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG). Qualifications as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Military Animal Care Specialist (91T), or degrees in veterinary medicine/science will be considered but individuals will be eligible to obtain certification at the LATG level within 2-4 years. Work experience must include four years’ experience in laboratory animal facilities.  Experience must be related to the species housed in the Building 49 CAF (e.g., Rodents, Rabbits, 13-lined Ground Squirrels, Zebrafish, Sand Rats, Swine, and Non-Human Primates). Formal education shall include a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent with working knowledge computers and associated software (e.g., WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Electronic Mail).

Duties

  • Adhere to established Bldg 49 Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Work tactfully and effectively with Co-Workers and Laboratory Staff.
  • Routine animal health surveillance and/or assessment of sick animals.
  • Routine veterinary care/support and treatments as prescribed by the Veterinary Staff.
  • Maintains permanent animal health records and reports.
  • Diagnostic support to include sample collection and preparation (e.g., blood, serum, tissue, etc.), fecal analysis, hematology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, radiology, and dental prophylaxis.
  • Work under ABS Level I and II conditions.
  • Anesthesia support to include induction, maintenance, and recovery of animals.
  • Surgical support to include instrument preparation and sterilization, animal preparation, sterile and non-sterile scrub assistants for the support of aseptic surgeries.
  • Environmental enrichment activities.
  • Sanitation of surgical rooms and support areas.
  • Radiation monitoring of posted rooms and/or areas within the CAF.
  • Routine preventive maintenance of all surgical support equipment (e.g., intensive care units, anesthesia machines, etc.).
  • Perform technical procedures including but not limited to routine injections, blood collection, tumor observations, weighing of animals, and implantation of subcutaneous transponders.
  • Pre-procedural food and/or water restriction of animals.
  • Routine serology screening for rodent surveillance and quarantine rooms.

POSITION TITLE: Animal Care Technicians

SUPERVISOR: Large Animal Team Leader

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Large Animal Team Leader the NHP Animal Care Technician shall have demonstrated knowledge and skill in handling animals, especially NHP's. The Large Animal Care Technician will have experience with Non-human Primates. They shall be able to recognize the appearance of abnormal animals and be able to maintain a clean environment for all animals. In addition, this person will also be responsible for assisting investigators, keeping appropriate records, and providing supplies when requested. The Animal Care Technician shall maintain accurate room logs and maintain the cleanliness of the facility.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification or one year’ experience in a laboratory animal facility, animal hospital, zoo, or related animal field. All Animal Care Technician’s shall train and become ALAT certified within one year of employment.
  • Candidates must possess an excellent command of the English language both written and verbal in order to effectively communicate with investigators and other staff members daily.

RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:

Essential Duties:

Laboratory Animal Resources/Research Resources - Rodent Animal Care Technician
(Animal Technician II)
Work Hours:6:00 AM to 2:30 PM from Monday through Friday and supervisor scheduled weekends/holidays/weather emergencies/university closings.

Summary:
The Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) group at Princeton University is a centralized administrative department reporting to the Dean for Research and is responsible for animal and veterinary care of all research animals at Princeton University. The Animal Technician for the Life Sciences Complex provides state-of-the art animal care for laboratory animals housed within these facilities. He/she receives direction from the LAR Facility Manager. The primary responsibility is to provide animal care to the various laboratory species (rodents, aquatics, and USDA-covered species), the majority will be in the care of rodents. The Animal Technician ensures the cleanliness of the facility and the maintenance of adequate supplies of food and bedding materials, including PPE. The Animal Technician will work together with other technicians according to a schedule prepared by the LAR Manager and must be willing and able to rotate through all LAR facilities. The Animal Technician pursues and improves methods of animal husbandry and resource utilization. He/she ensures the highest quality of laboratory animal care and research support, and has good communication skills with co-workers, the LAR management team, PI’s, research staff, students, facility maintenance crews and other support services. This position reports directly to the Facility Manager.
Animal Husbandry:

  • Animal Technicians are considered essential services staff. Essential service staff performs jobs that are necessary and required to maintain basic University operations during scheduled or unscheduled work closures due to emergencies, events or other situations.
  • Provides animal care for all species housed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including giving food and water to the animals, changing cages, sanitizing all supplies (cages, water bottles, food bins and other animal care related equipment), maintaining clean animal rooms, procedure rooms, hallways and other support areas, and keeping records related to animal care.
  • Completes work in a timely fashion and according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and follows other written and verbal instructions as needed.
  • Monitors animal health and welfare daily and reports sick and dead animals to the responsible researcher and Veterinary Services. Provides treatments to laboratory animals as prescribed by researchers and/or Veterinary Services.
  • Monitors, documents and reports deviations of normal, species-specific and environmental parameters such room temperature, humidity, lights and air quality.
  • Provides innovative and species-specific environmental enrichment of laboratory animals under the direction of Veterinary Services and according to research needs.
  • Conduct AM and PM animal health observations.
  • Operates cage washing machinery, ventilated caging, Edstrom watering system, bedding dispensing units, full size to table top autoclaves and other animal care equipment typical of animal care operations while following safety procedures.
  • Assists with transgenic rodent breeding colony management. Demonstrates ability to perform tissue sample collection, set up mating pairs, wean animals, and track data in various software applications.
  • Discovers and reports any facility maintenance issues to the Lead Animal Technician and Facility Manager.
