Large Animal Floor Leader, AFS I/II (NIH/DVR, Bethesda, MD)
JOB TITLE: Large Animal Floor Leader, Animal Facility Specialist I or II
LOCATION: NIH DVR14 Area, Bethesda, MD
Summary:
Primary responsibilities for the Floor Supervisors/Leaders will be to provide daily oversight and direction to husbandry staff caring for animals within the assigned building or area; as directed by the Task Manager, they will assist with scheduling assignments and ensuring task completion in accordance with DVR facility SOPs and approved animal study proposals; will perform routine husbandry duties on a daily basis; and will serves as backup for Task Managers in the event of absence. They will ensure the animal holding rooms and ancillary areas are maintained in a clean and organized manner. Floor Leaders must demonstrate the ability to interact with investigators and have experience with the type of species housed in the animal facility (i.e., non-human primates)
Requirements:
Must be certified at the AALAS LATG Technician level or higher and have 3 years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility. Prior supervisory and leadership experience is preferred but not required. Personal Computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite applications required.
Duties:
- Supervise and perform animal husbandry support services as directed by the Task Manager.
- Monitor the performance of subordinate personnel, praising quality performance, providing counseling or additional training/supervision for deficient performance.
- Identify potential problem areas with personnel, equipment, or facilities.
- Ensure adequate inventories of routinely used items are continuously available.
- Schedule, perform, and document activities necessary to accomplish task assignments.
- Ensure records, logbooks, and other project records are appropriately documented and maintained.
- Awareness of and compliance with policies, regulations, safety, and security procedures.
- Establish liaison and communications with research personnel to facilitate responsiveness.
- Provide husbandry and care to research animals, monitoring their environment, and observing their health status when needed. • Record observations in animal records.
- Assist in the receipt of animals.
- Adhere to established SOPs, assist in the revision of current SOPs and development of new SOPs.
- Assist, when requested, in handling and restraint of animals for examination and determination of animal body weight.
- Clean and sanitize rooms and equipment and participate in environmental monitoring.
- Support and comply with the QA/QC program.
- Work in concert and cooperation with NIH compliance assurance entities (Safety & Health, IACUC).
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:
- High School diploma and AALAS LAT for the AFS-I positions and High School diploma and LATG Certification is required for the AFSII position.
- Fundamental knowledge of animal research operations
- Literate in written and spoken English
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an animal facility with AAALACi accreditation preferred
- Knowledgeable in PC applications including Word documents, Outlook and Excel spreadsheets
